GPG encryption plugins for the webmails
« le: 28 juillet 2013 à 22:13:38 »
Hi,

I am testing WebPG, a Firefox plugin which aims to allow encrypting and reading encrypted mail using GPG directly in the webmail. It has yet some issues, but I wanted to come talk about it because it looks promising. Well in fact I don't know what it is doing right now because it would not let me post in the forum editor without me opening a secure window, where I don't see the buttons of the editor. ^^
(but I'll find a turn around).

You can visit the author's website here: http://www.curetheitch.com/

and the code google repos where I just posted issues and got answers soo fast!

It's sure good to have such a tool. But I prefer to use a real mail client with Enigmail, I find it so much better. You don't have to visit each webmail and you don't have to keep a tab opened in your browser for each address.

This is also what I do: using Sylpheed with gpgme and such, and not having webmails opened. However the tool could be handy when not having a connection allowing more than http and https, and for people who use only webmail with one and only mail address. (Although encrypting a text file which can be sent as an attachment and decrypting it with a command line works fine too).

Hello, I am the author of WebPG and I just wanted to point a few things out.

The best place to learn about WebPG would be http://webpg.org/

The google code repository is really just a way for people to find the project, the actual code lives at https://github.com/kylehuff/webpg-firefox/ and the issue tracker on there is more lively.

I also wanted to point out that WebPG is not only for Mozilla Firefox -- also Chromium and Google Chrome on Windows, Linux and OSX.

And finally, I have the WebPG toolbar enabled, and it does not seem to interfere with replying to this post.

Hello, I am the author of WebPG ...
First of all, welcome to our forum. I see you are a first time poster. How did you learn of us? Are we showing up in the search engines?

On the WebPG main page you say

Citer
WebPG is a free, open source suite of tools to bring GnuPG/PGP (gpg, gnupg) to the browser, in an effort to make cryptographic methods usable, safe and accessible to the common man.
I don't see other web applications mentioned such as mail readers, IRC, instant messaging, etc. But I do see on that web page that you offer a Thunderbird client. Do you intend to create WebPG clients for any other applications? And is this an easier way to get people to start using private GPG keys?

Hi kylehuff,

I join my welcome message do djohnston's.

I have pointed to the present thread at kylehuff's code google issues section when I posted there, this is how he has known about our forum. And I started being interested about WebPG after Goodbox, who just provided me a webspace at the new crunchbang-fr.org web server, told me he didn't use a mail client, and he needed to send me codes and passwords in a safe way to make me access to the webspace. Finally, he sent me an encrypted text file as an attachment, however in the meanwhile I decided to put interest in kyle's program and offered to continue testing it and reporting about my findings, because it is the only plugin for webmail I know of which can allow an easier use of gpg for people who don't use the command line too much. (I found another one but according to the comments at the mozilla plugins place it is crummy).

About Thunderbird : there is already Enigmail which has been allowing to use easy GPG encryption. I have started with it long ago. I hope it still works well. When it comes to webmail it is different because there is no other good tool for this purpose.

Right now I am using inline WebPG toolbar in the present post. It forces me to use secure editor, which does not provide any of the usual buttons from the editor, and forces me to sign the message (or select any other action among several... even though I can remove the signature), before clicking "Insert".

It would be nice to have an additional option allowing to deactivate this feature in forums and any place which is not a webmail. But how does this feature recognize which type of edition window is used? Maybe asking the tool to be active only on some domains would be a better idea?
