After a few fits of rage, some moments of panic, quite a few restarts from scratch and many, many configurations later, I have finally produced DebWeb_RC3 remaster, based on remastersys. Please let me know if you find anything missing or not working correctly. This may be the last time I used remastersys for this one. I am going to learn how to remaster the Debian way.

Based on: Debian wheezy and Taco.22's LinuxVillage remaster as a starting point
Window manager: Openbox
Desktop environment: Openbox

Minimum RAM: 512MB (The Live to RAM option can be run in as little as 256MB, but Firefox won't start.)
Kernel: 3.7.0-9.dmz.2-liquorix-686 (PAE 32bit kernel)

This Debian web applications respin began with a simple concept - use Firefox and Thunderbird, instead of Debian's Iceweasel and Icedove. Why?

(1) At least a few common addons for Firefox/Thunderbird do not work with Iceweasel/Icedove.
(2) Because I can.

I do not have a repository set up for them. They were installed directly from Mozilla's site and have been constantly updated since. Both applications are configured to be updated directly from Mozilla's site. As a result, both applications can be updated, while running, just as soon as Mozilla releases a new update. There is no waiting for a repository update. It's the same method used on Windows desktops. It works well.

The ZRAM kernel module is not offered in any Debian kernel in any Debian repository that I've found. ZRAM has been manually installed and configured and is available out of the box. ZRAM can be turned off from an Openbox menu entry, and can be restarted the same way. The liquorix kernel is installed so that ZRAM can be easily used without having to recompile the Debian kernel.

The Internationalization & Localization application has been installed from the Semplice repository. A weather module (gweather3.py) has been installed to give weather reporting capabilities from the main menu. And remastersys was installed from the remastersys repository. All other applications are installed from Debian repositories. The multimedia repository is included and enabled in the sources list.

Because this respin's focus is web use, I'll start with those applications.

Local weather readings from the main menu




The instructions for changing the menu to your local weather are contained in a text file in your user's Documents directory. It is a simple text edit, after locating your weather code on weather.com's website.

I'm sure they do. And you have to wait until someone packages a new release and puts it in the repo. With my method, you get updates as soon as Mozilla releases them.

P.S. Firefox is currently at version 19.0.

Check the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ directory of the live CD.

My directory is blank.    When you have a minute or two could you post
the repo line, it's probably a SID repo.

I'm doing backups this weekend so my CPU is kinda busy.

Add that to your sources list. apt will determine if you need a 32bit or 64bit kernel and offer the appropriate one. Once you add the source, you won't have the repo key. Just do a reload in Synaptic and you'll get the missing keyring error message. Then search in Synaptic for keyring. There are 3 for liquorix. One is a meta package to pull in the other two. Add the keyrings and reload again. You'll be set.

Some feedback.    Didn't try the iso itself but it looks like a winner on paper.    I
would change a few small programs but that's minor.    Major thing is the deb
multimedia repo.    Very bad IMHO.    I trtied VLC and Clementine out of there
with bad results.    Both programs are actually in the normal deb testing repo.
Took  libdvdcss and faac from the deb multimedia repo and turned it off forever.

BTW the 3.7 kernel works fine, but the new 3.8.8 kernel from liquorix won't boot
for me.

So that's what I think today.

Fancy I would want to use the Debweb spin and get it to work : what steps should be taken to get it to the desired result concerning multimedia ?

And about that liquorix kernel : same, let's say I'd like to feel like I would be in front of your own machine while reading your post. Which kernel is the default, what did you do to switch, and what does your computer contain as far as hardware is concerned ?

Quite simple.    Both VLC and Clementine are in the deb testing
repo.    Should be 100 % useful then.   The deb multimedia repo
is a nonsupported repo and does cause conflicts, it did to me.
So I stay out of there as much as possible, don't want lib's
getting crossed up someday.

And about that liquorix kernel : same, let's say I'd like to feel like I would be in front of your own machine while reading your post. Which kernel is the default, what did you do to switch, and what does your computer contain as far as hardware is concerned ?

It's not surprising some of these new kernels don't work,
happens all the time at Fedora.   But, my machine is just
an Intel Atom 1.6 with just standard Intel graphics, etc..   The
3.2.x kernel that came with Scorpio works, the 3.7.0 kernel
from liquorix works, but the 3.8.8 kernel from liquorix won't
finish booting.   No big loss, happy the 3.7.0 works so well.
Some new feature not compatible with my machine I guess.

I forgot to add to the notes that Firefox/Thunderbird executables have been moved to /opt directory. I've only encountered one problem. That's when Thunderbird is updated. I don't know whether it's because I haven't set up Thunderbird with personal data or not. In any case, what happens is that ownership/permissions on a few update files get changed during the process of updating Thunderbird. I'll be sure to add this info to the release notes after the next update.

FYI, if you run into this, as root, enter the Thunderbird directory, then change the ownership/permissions of all files as listed below:

Thunderbird will then update. I've never had this problem with Firefox. Remember that they are both updated in place, while the program is running, just as one would update them in a Windows installation. Both have been installed from Mozilla's website, not from Debian packages.

No.  Debian offers rebadged versions of Mozilla products with the branding stripped out, although filezilla is OK.  To install Firefox/Thunderbird you need to go outside the Debian repos.
