Only thing I've got to run stable on my laptop are Fedora and OpenSUSE.

I may have missed it, but have you tried Debian?

Nope, but since Ubuntu is based on Debian and Elementary is based on Ubuntu in return I don't really expect too much of it lol.

It is, of course, your decision to make. However, I think you've reached an erroneous conclusion. Elementary did not come from Debian. And, once Ubuntu takes a "snapshot" of Debian testing, unstable, or whatever, then applies their own patches, it ceases to be Debian.

Ubuntu is soooooo far from Debian it is not funny, it's like a different animal some times.

Elementary is a sweet distro but I wish they would have based off of Debian as Ubuntu distros can have a slow boot time. Other than that, I kinda like it.It would be a good distro to put on new users machines.

mostly due to processes to be started...

so it depends who built it (ie Madbox is very fast, Bento is quite fast too, especially the last mini).

It boots in about three seconds on my machine. Haven't tested on my desktop but it should boot much faster than Windows.

OS X is quite fast with booting, I have to say so, my iMac with OS X 10.7 Lion boots in 15 seconds from a regular HDD.

So, I finally fixed the freezing issue. It was due to the kernel I was using. Upgraded to kernel 3.5.0-28 and now the freezing does not occur anymore/yet. Must say the support is pretty solid in the IRC channel
