Debian packaging - how to?

I'm going through various resources on how to build .deb packages.  Just wondering if anyone has some practical pointers regarding tutorials or sites that are good to start with.

Hi,

Yes I do, as I have started packaging some time ago (but just started... I have to start again, train and learn more). The best method is to go to the IRC chan of the Debian mentors and ask where are the best docs to start with.

I had printed the 25 pages and gone through, yet a package was built but it was not enough, so I had to ask help at their chan again. I also had this one page to read after:

Ah, one of the pages I had bookmarked was http://wiki.debian.org/HowToPackageForDebian, which has your first mentioned link as required reading.  Should all be very interesting.  Would you recommend a separate stand-alone system specifically for packaging?

Yes, for sure. You will have to install the whole development set of packages therefore you might appreciate not having to get your usual system crowded with devel packages and all their depends. And in that one system let the recommended installed as default, to avoid using time to seek for what could be missing.

It should overall be easier for you than it is for me, being using English as your native language. I have to say it is always a bit tough for me.
