Titre: Start New Project
Posté par: konaexpress le 28 janvier 2013 à 20:34:33
Hi guys and gal,

I have been away for a little over a month on vacation and for the holidays and wow are things changing. So.......

White Island is having massive problems now so I am looking for a new project to play with.   I have not quit the Orca project but need something to do. I was thinking of a Debian LXDE base again but I want to stay away from an Ubuntu base as this creates all kinds of problems. Once again I am thinking of something small that can run on netbooks and can be used for BASIC programming using the BaCon IDE.  Any ideas?  I will find some free web hosting so that I can see to the up keep of it.  My plan is to just keep it small and usable and maybe a SMALL user base, nothing big, don't need the headache.

Welcome Konaexpress !

You will find out that Taco.22 has created a perfect base to build whatever you want on it. I let you seek for his latest "Village RC2" widely improved, along with djohnston's active participation.

John,

Glad to see you back! The VillageLinux base is excellent. Many quirks have been worked out and bugs squashed. I believe you have a preference for LXDE. I used to. LXDE is a desktop environment which uses the Openbox window manager. I've found using just the Openbox window manager and native desktop tools and adding selected LXDE programs makes for a far better user experience. YMMV.

If you still want to tinker with LXDE, may I suggest a Debian net install? That will install just LXDE and nothing else. Well, except for OpenOffice, and GIMP, and ... But, no other desktop environments. You should try the netinstall at least once. It's very easy. If you want/need pointers, just ask/PM Taco.22 or myself.

Thanks guys,

I gave the Village RC2 a shot but it looks to lock up at the live boot screen. It already has Thunar installed correct? Would it get  mangled up if I use PC man fm?

The file manager has no bearing on the iso not loading. Can you define "lock up"? Are you seeing any error messages? Do you get a kernel panic? Just as an aside, the iso uses xz compression instead of the standard lzma. Are you giving it enough time to get to the desktop?

Another question would be does the CPU in your PC have PAE extensions? If it doesn't, that's where it's hanging. If that is the case, the iso can be remastered with a different kernel for older CPUs. The video card may possibly be an issue, but that's just a guess. What video card are you using?

EDIT: To check for PAE compatibility, open a terminal and as a regular user do:

hwinfo | grep pae

If you get output, the CPU is PAE compatible.

Hi kona - how long did you let the boot process wait?  It can take anywhere between a few seconds and nearly a minute (worst case) before the isolinux boot screen changes - depends on computer speed.  You then get a little spinning wheel on a grey background.  After a bit the wheel speeds up and it boots direct to the desktop.  By the way you can replace Thunar with pcmanfm - that way you will get desktop icons.  You'll need to rework the autostart file, and I'm not sure what happens with gigolo, but I guess we will find out!!  Does pcmanfm do wallpaper?  Anyway, any queries just ask.

I probably need to do a version without the PAE kernel - how old would a computer have to be if it can't use PAE?

Sorry about all that, I shot that out before bed.

I know that the file manager does not effect the boot LOL........

PAE is the problem, I did not have it setup on my VBox.

PAE should be OK, I plan on this being used on net books but older machines will have a problem with it.

I will go mark VBox for PAE and get back to you guys.

Well, a PentiumIII CPU is pae capable. So, it's not necessarily the age of the machine.

Hi,

All Ubuntu versions also where provided with pae kernels when the latest LTS came out except one : Lubuntu! Which continues to resist to the pae temptation! At least until next LTS version (don't know about intermediate versions).

What about installing a non pae kernel in Village RC2, so that more machines can work with it ? Else, what about reverting the compression level to what it was before ? I think more people are likely to complain about a screen staying black instead of looking like it's booting.

His problem was installing in VirtualBox, not on bare metal.

Else, what about reverting the compression level to what it was before ? I think more people are likely to complain about a screen staying black instead of looking like it's booting.

The compression method can always be easily changed. However, I'll say up fromt that my last DebWeb respin had to use xz in order to keep it CD sized. I'll try both compression methods on the next one.

Got it installed OK.

Good job with this distro! It looks good and runs well, so I installed LXDE over the top of it.

The Gparted bit will confuse the heck out of new users though.

The source list needs to be updated with the testing branch to get things like gdebi installed.

I like it, dumping the Weezy install for this.

Melodie is working on the CAPTCHA thing. Please bear with us. A better solution will come.

The Gparted bit will confuse the heck out of new users though.

Do you mean the GParted program itself, or do you mean having to create and/or resize partitions?

The source list needs to be updated with the testing branch to get things like gdebi installed.

All of the sources have the testing branch enabled. However, you may be referring to this:

Taco.22, Is this a problem on my end or is the error message for that Australian repo valid? I don't know.

konaexpress, Uncheck the two Australian repos, scroll down the list and check the two US repos. You'll be all set. Again, all the sources in the list have the testing section enabled.

Sorry about the repo - I meant to post about it in the Remaster thread.  It seems to have gone AWOL so just comment the au out and pick another.  I've had to change it on my main computer as well.  I'll see if there is a better au repo.

Sorry about the repo

Not a problem. My own remaster got a little messy the last couple of days. I'm still trying to figure out how the whole apt setup works. For example, on my other machine, which is running wheezy, I get the following in Synaptic when I select sources.

There seems to be nothing special about /etc/apt/sources.list. It is only showing the US repo for binary and source and the security updates. But, when I click the "Download from:" button, I get two more choices.

Clicking the "Other" choice gives me the entire worldwide list of Debian servers.

I'm trying to figure out how that happens, because I sure don't have them all in a source list file in /etc/apt or in /etc/apt/sources.list.d. Maybe I get too hung up on little stuff like this. But, I like to try and get all the kinks I see out because someone else will find more. I've already finished all the menuing, program choices, app configs, etc. After this one thing I seem to be stuck on, I'll select a theme, set the GRUB splash screen, etc, etc. Then I can finally post a link to this thing.

I blame melodie entirely for my problems regarding Synaptic.

Back in the bad old days, when we were still young and innocent, the lost tribe of OB was given its marching orders, yea verily expelled,  from the fabled lands of PCLOS.  Banished, no less.  Lost and bewildered we trekked across the trackless wastes, stumbled through foreign forums and dabbled in mysterious distros.  Before you knew it the ways of Arch and Sabayon had infiltrated and bent our minds.  By the time we reached the Promised Land of Debian - well, speaking for myself of course, melodie was bewitched by the siren call of 'buntu and we lost her in the shadows - all thought of GUI had been banished and we were pupils of the command line.  Long live "apt-get", and his/her partner "apt-cache".  All worship the Terminal, and abide by the the vow of "--no-install-recommends".

Anyway, short story long - no idea about Synaptic anymore - haven't used it in ages.  Even removed it from Scorpio.

Oh, by the way, the "au" repo I'm now using is one I used to use a while ago -
## AU
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/debian/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.iinet.net.au/debian/debian testing main contrib non-free

It's a secondary mirror - don't know what happened to the Debian mirror - but this one is way faster.  It's actually my service provider as well, so it should be good!!  Well, service provider once removed - don't ask!

Anyway I'll probably include that in the next mini-upgrade, but maybe not as default - if you going to list a source it may as well work!

Because you have one more package related. I have found that too in my former Ubuntu Openbox versions. The package should be...

apt-mirror-setup, or perhaps brought in by update-manager. You could find out by searching with "apt" keyword in descriptions at debian packages page:

Yes, that was easy for you, you just picked the Bonsai spin and started to work ! :D

I had prior to make a project at the community forum which then ceased suddenly to exist and oops ! all the work there lost and forgotten (not lost&found unfortunately), try to make an iso core from scratch, which I never succeded, got the one done by etjr, then started the real pain, from beginning July until September : several isos a day ! Then in September only the first test spin was ready. Then several months of daily work with the testers and more advanced users who helped debugging very critical issues.

I can still link to the thread... if you wish to look again, see at the bottom of this post: https://meylodie.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/pclinuxos-bonsai-en

Now about Synaptic, the one and unique provided by the Debian community, the best gui package manager tool ever ! It is way faster than the one adapted for apt-rpm, and has many more features, which I should show you if you need to, in the coming times ! Have a look into the different sections at the bottom left, if you haven't yet.

And you can install deborphan, add a filter for orphaned packages (this will work, provided you know a little your packages, unlike the rpmorphan packages from Mandriva which is likely to bring you to break the system) and you can remove all configuration files left after uninstalling packages. \o/ !

I'm a big fan of Synaptic but a funny thing happened when I started playing around with Arch and Sabayon - I found the command line approach to package management easier than through a GUI!  When I settled on Debian and got back with Synaptic I was curious about apt-get and learned about that.  Now I do everything through apt-get and apt-cache, including stuff that I could never figure out how to do through Synaptic.  The one word of warning here is that what I've read here and there suggests that you use one or the other, and not to mix them - things have the potential to get messy.
Titre: Re : Start New Project
Posté par: melodie le 30 janvier 2013 à 17:57:41
No, Synaptic is a frontend to apt package management. I have been using either or during years, without any issue whatsoever.

What you must not use together are apt-get and aptitude. I have tried aptitude, which I find overly complicated! For any package you install, it submits different schemes, with probabilities : I really dislike this program.

Back to apt-get and Synaptic : Synaptic is more practical for finding packages, applications, than "apt-cache search" is, and also it allows filtering by size to be able to find out what packages use the more space, and which you can get rid off without danger for the system.

The command line tools are much lighter on resources, and faster to start useing, therefore I always prefer them on low resource machines, and when I know what package I want to install.

There is another cli frontend you might want to try, it is wajig. Very good for doing things which you don't know what command line is needed. See here:

I meant that new users will have problems with the Gparted app as it is not very intuitive, not all I should say. I had to play with it a bit to make the needed swap partition. You would think that Debian would have made a better installer by now that just works for new users with a default install and an advanced button.

The best installer I have seen so far was for Pardus, that was dang nice but it is written in Python I think. I like the Mint installer but not sure how it is to work with.

Now I am off to think up a name and then graphics for my little project.......help.....

Hi,

Project name "kona-express-project" ?

The installer from Village RC2 and following is the one provided by Remastersys and is not that difficult. If you compare with Ubiquity, the Ubuntu installer, I would say that it is perhaps more simple regarding the partitioning part, and also is very much lighter on resource!

And there is a fantastic howto at the gparted website, in all languages, as html, pdf, and even with screenshots. Once used to it Gparted is very easy and intuitive. Anyhow newcomers don't even know what a partition is !

Well, I took the cue and searched for apt in **gasp** Synaptic. From the description, I think apt-mirror-setup is for setting up a repository. Anyway, the package providing that gui is python-apt. Works a charm.

But not all close to truth. When I started under Linux, one of the very first writings I published has been related to the "Linux Country Voyage". You can see a mix of it and of someone else's I liked very much, here (http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fmeets.citrotux.org%2F2006%2F01%2F03%2Fordinateurs-en-liberte&act=url). I will ask you to commit yourself to spread the Linux/Gnu word around you, and experiment with people geographically close to you, wherever you are. Recently I pushed an old couple of people out of Vista to Lubuntu. In both systems (they now have a dualboot) they confuse password for the system, password for the mail access and password for the the ISP connection. I had to give them a full course to make that more clear to them, plus a few other tricks, such as configuring a mail client for them so that they get it more simple to manage their messages.

Please, let me know if you get personal experiences with that (I don't say all users are like that, but many around here are).

"Easier for users": sell them hard drives or even better : machines with preinstalled easy to go Linux distributions... it will be a bit easier but this will not teach them how to use a machine.

It's kind of a shame what has happened with PCLOS. It was the easiest to remaster.

I have to say that Remastersys is not much harder.  Set the system and make sure /etc/skel is organised and the remastering pretty well does the rest on its own.

Regarding gparted, many installers don't allow partitioning on the fly.  Usually you have to set the partitions before hand.  One point to remember - if you don't want to waste space on swap just set it to 2 or 3MB; you can't NOT have a swap partition but you can make it almost non-existent.

@melodie
Regarding Synaptic - does it allow a simulated install?  The other thing with apt-get/apt-cache is being able to print lists, searches and processes to a text file really easily.
Example, in terminal "ejt@scorpio:~$ apt-cache search chromium-browser > list" writes a text file as -
Citer
chromium-browser - Chromium browser - transitional dummy package
chromium-browser-dbg - chromium-browser debug symbols transitional dummy package
chromium-browser-inspector - page inspector for the chromium-browser - transitional dummy package
chromium-browser-l10n - chromium-browser language packages - transitional dummy package
chromium-l10n - chromium-browser language packages
Nifty!

Yes, you can fake the install of a package. Select, select for installation, hit the button "Apply" then it shows you a list of packages which will be installed, the total amount of MB pulled in, how much space it will take once all installed, then you can choose to confirm or to cancel.

You can even download without installing, if for instance you just want to look inside a package to see what it contains. (Then you will have to seek for it into /var/cache/apt/archives)

Ooooh, pushed out of a vista. Did they have a hard landing? Seriously, though, did they? Hardy har har. Seriously, though, there are many like that. I still do service calls for a woman about my age running PCLinuxOS. Bless her heart, though, she just does not understand computers at all. She will call occasionally with either an email problem or a printer "problem". I can usually diagnose either with a quick dialin to her computer using TeamViewer. The last time I had to go to her house was to replace a router.

When she does call, she usually begins with "I can't get into my computer." Translated, it means she can't access her email account. "I can't print" means she has messed up the print job queue. I have instructed her several times on how to use both the HP printer toolbox and CUPS. It all goes in one ear and out the other. She pays me well to fix minor problems.

Like I said, she was previously using Windows Vista. I was called because she couldn't do anything with her computer at all. Bad infestation. After my first service call, she was running Linux. That was two and a half to three years ago. I can recall only four or five service calls since. Two were for hardware.

"Easier for users": sell them hard drives or even better : machines with preinstalled easy to go Linux distributions... it will be a bit easier but this will not teach them how to use a machine.

Exactly.

@konaexpress,

Those users who would have trouble with partitioning would, most likely, never feel capable enough to reinstall Windows. Nor would they have the patience to download from the net all the service patches, then download and install all the apps they had. Their data would most likely have never been backed up. All the data stored in "My Documents" on their boot drive would most likely not be recovered. Any user who knew enough to be able to use a proprietary solution to recover their data would also have no problems installing almost any Linux distro. If it isn't pre-installed "from the factory", most people will take their computer to the "experts" at Geek Squad or a similar shop for software "repair" and/or a "tuneup".

"My computer just starts running slower and slower the longer I use it. It just picks up all this stuff that clogs it up." We may laugh about that, but that exact statement was made to me once. Along with, "Well, the computer won't run without Windows."

There was something else about Remastersys that actually makes it easier to use than Mylivecd- the live cd uses /etc/skel, and doesn't pick up the user account.  This means that it doesn't matter what mess the rest of the user account is in, you only have to have /etc/skel in order.  None of this - "Oh, I forgot to turn off hidden folders in my File Manager" - that sort of thing.  The one small disadvantage to this is that Mylivecd allowed you to set up a special live desktop with installer and info icons that disappeared when /etc/skel was invoked at install.  As long as you didn't forget or overlook anything of course.
