Titre: Nouvelles et dernières Bento Openbox Remix version Trusty
Posté par: melodie le 02 janvier 2018 à 07:12:03
Bonjour,

bento-sushi-14.04.5_2-i386.iso (http://downloads.linuxvillage.org/bento-sushi-14.04.5_2-i386.iso)   2018-01-02 06:35    371M

bento-sushi-14.04.5_2-i386.iso.md5sum (http://downloads.linuxvillage.org/bento-sushi-14.04.5_2-i386.iso.md5sum)   2018-01-02 06:35    65

I downloaded Sushi 64bit and live booted my computer.  It has been a while since I last played with such a stripped down system!!  I then did a hard install to a USB stick.  I was not happy with Ubuntu's installer wanting to format the swap on my hard drive, so in the end I just disconnected that drive and did the install.  However that is a Systemd issue and out of your hands.  The next thing that happened was that I updated the system and installed pcmanfm.  All good except that pcmanfm wouldn't display a USB stick I inserted.  I had to manually mount the stick and navigate to the /media file to see it.  I didn't go any further than that as it was getting a bit late to troubleshoot.  Otherwise everything that was on the original install worked - what there was of it!

Just for something different, I want to try Google translate English to French.  The French to English works very well, but you will have to be the judge it.  So...

Alors...

I hope that worked out   :)
Regards,
Taco.22

Hello Taco,

It was very well translated, almost perfect, everything is nicely explained.

To mount all external storage devices, such as USB sticks, gvfs and gvfs-backends need to be installed. gvfs-fuse can be useful too (you can check what it provides using "apt-cache show gvfs-fuse").

Best regards,

Cordialement,
Taco.22

Hi,

Ubuntu Mini Remix is not my doing, it's made by Fabrizio BALLIANO, an Italian developer whose project is for now on standby. 16.04 is the last version out.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-mini-remix

https://fabrizioballiano.net/ubuntu-mini-remix/

It containes nothing else than the base allowing it to be installed to a computer, but it isn't a netinstall, it's meant to build what you want, on it. If you want to play with it, you might try Customizer, which is now maintained by Kamilion: https://github.com/kamilion/customizer
https://github.com/kamilion/customizer/wiki/First-guide

(it's a heavy task, so if you try, you will need a computer with a processor having some muscles).

Sushi is the small version of Bento, and yes you are right, I'll add the tools for the mount to be automatic in next versions. I get it that too stripped isn't user friendly. :)

Salut,

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-mini-remix

https://fabrizioballiano.net/ubuntu-mini-remix/

https://github.com/kamilion/customizer/wiki/First-guide

PS2: Ubuntu Mini Remix is the base I have been using all these years to produce Bento Openbox.  ;)

PS3: about the list of packages, you have it in the file named filesystem.manifest in all ISOs, you can open any ISO with file-roller and see where it is located, then open it with your favorite text editor

Well you learn something every day!  Nice tip.

I'll probably leave the mini-remix well alone!  Way too much work for me after all these years - much prefer not having to continually reinvent the wheel.  Been there, done that!  Speaking of which, I'm having issues with pcmanfm in sushi - error messages in .xsession-errors and not able to make my custom actions work.  I get the feeling that there is quite a bit more I need to install to fix this, so I will move onto the full Bento, because someone has already done the job!  And a very nice job too!!  We have it on three computers at home and they all work fine.  Could I suggest that duplication be reduced by removing the software center and the updater.  I find Synaptic does a good job as a gui, and then there is always apt-get in terminal.  I probably use them 50/50.

I will do a live install of your test Bento and check it out.

Thanks again for the compliments. When you will try your custom actions in the full Bento, if they don't work, please copy the content of the custom actions and explain what they are meant for. I'll try them, and if I can't get them to work we can ask the developer of pcmanfm gtk how to make it work.

He is on a #lxde chan where he can be usually be reached. (on the server irc.oftc.net)

.xsession-errors : some errors might be harmless. What errors are there?

About your suggest : I don't want to remove the software center because it is very intuitive for the very newbees, and it is easy to remove for users such as yourself. I'll rather make a middle size Bento, and not continue Sushi, perhaps. It will have the full Bento base and no applications except all the usual texte mode tools + pcmanfm, synaptic, a web browser : do you want to suggest one? Done Netsurf, done Midori, none of them does the job or is reliable enough, most of the other ones are greedy in size…

How should we name a middle size Bento? :)

Hi Mélodie,

The custom commands for pcmanfm all work on the Bento installs on our computers, so I would expect the same of the new model.  There is quite a bit missing from Sushi, things like polkit and a number of other things that are all in the full version.  It would be a case of working out specifically what was needed for pcmanfm to do its thing.  A middle size Bento sounds good, sort of a teenage Sushi!  I like the Japanese theme and have just ploughed through a whole pile of food and culinary terms - I think I need to sleep on that.  Besides, it made me hungry!  As regarding a browser, that has been a problem for years.  There just never seems to be a mid level browser, or if there is it gets discontinued after a bit.  Midori is quite functional, and one I used to use is Qupzilla.  I like Qupzilla but I am having issues trying to get it to do Youtube - and I'm not the only one.  Something to do with html5, gstream and plugins - still working on it.

Salut Taco,

https://www.tecmint.com/best-top-linux-open-source-web-browser/

sudo apt install epiphany-browser
I tried "Doodle" right before, even after I installed the ppa for the qt 5.10 packages, it was not a good idea. But "Web" seems simple, however very fast and it seems to work fine. Please let me know how it goes for you?

Hi Mélodie,

That dent you see in the wall near you is from me banging my head over the light-weight browser issue over the years!  There really is no solution - if you want full features you have to go Chromium/Chrome, Firefox or Opera.  Other derivatives come and go all too often.  Regarding the small fish, Web is designed for touch screens, Qupzilla has qt issues regarding html5, Dillo and Netsurf don't translate or do video, and Midori also has issues with html5.  Basically what you are doing is supplying a small disposable browser in the live build.  It's purpose is to access the net and help answer queries and to troubleshoot issues before and after installation.  Invariably it will be replaced by one of the big browsers once installation is complete.  Midori seems to be the least problematic for that purpose, especially with the ability to translate on the Bento forum.

Regarding a name for the mid size Bento, a few have come to mind.  "Bonito', after the dried fish, and "Shiitake", after the famous mushroom.  I had to cut the other two - "Santuko" is a distro and "Wasabi" is a programming language.  I'm still working through the Japanese cookbook!

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makizushi

Hi Taco.22,

for the name, I believe that after "Bento Openbox", "Bento Sushi", an intermediate version could be named "Bento Maki". Here are some Makizushis:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makizushi

(again an opportunity to sharpen your appetite just by looking at the pictures! :D)

For the web browser, you are unfortunately too right! I saw that "Web" is fast, but there is a catch with the file epiphany.desktop: the menu starts well from the Openbox applications menu, but oddly, it does not want to start from the menu of the panel lxpanel!

I tried to modify the .desktop file, (by putting the modified version under ~/.local/share/applications), the modification is well taken into account but it does not work any better. It's a mystery, that I do not have time to dig in further (I would have to contact people on some IRC tchats, to provide me with some types of tests to find out what goes wrong, and it would take more time than I can take).

Now about Midori, the problem is that the version from the repositories is more than shriveled (very very very old) and the recent version, the 5.11, at home: it crashes often.

So, what if I gave up Sushi? And that I make a Bento Maki, and a "Big Bento"?

Bento Maki will always be smaller in size than 700 MB, and "Big Bento" will be bigger in size at 700 MB, and I will be able to put a lot of applications for users, instead of holding myself from adding more end user applications which I find desirable to have?

Hi Mélodie,

Bento Maki doesn't have to be a lot bigger than Sushi.  Basically the same base as Bento but without most of the software - light browser, terminal, synaptic, text editor, file manager.  Just as long as applications can be installed without having to chase up obscure packages.  Speaking of which, you need to include "make" and "gcc".  Apart from other things, you can't activate shared folders in Vbox without them.  I found that out tonight!  I have installed Bento 64bit into VBox and it zips along almost as fast as Bento on the hard drive.  By the way, I had no problem adding custom actions to pcmanfm.

Regarding the browser - as I said it's basically disposable, so whatever has the smallest footprint with suitable features will be fine.  I haven't found Midori to crash on my system, but then it doesn't remain in the system for very long!

Hi Taco.22,

how come gcc and make are needed to create shared folders with VirtualBox and how have you discovered it? Was that from a search on internet?

When I will do Bento Maki, you will have the opportunity to test it and report anything you might find missing or improvements to be made. Would you rather have me start with a i386 edition or a x86_64? Usually i386 is what I prefer doing first because it needs less RAM memory to work with. Just let me know?

PS: I added my testimonial to a bug report related to Epiphany Browser, on Launchpad:

Hi Mélodie,

"Make" and "gcc" are required for compiling VBox Guest Addition kernel modules, which then enable shared folders.  The error messages appear in the console when doing Guest Additions.

For testing Bento Maki I would prefer x86-64, as all our computers are now 64 bit.  Got to move forward!

it seems very good, you didn't find any glitch whatsoever in this new remix then? Hopefully none of the new ISOs have any issue, they are just simple updates from the previous ones.

Hi Mélodie,

Well I've got Bento in both VBox and VMware!  I had forgotten that I had installed VMware - it was a while back.  Anyway, I realised that File-roller is missing from Bento-openbox-14.04.5_2-x86_64.  If you are going to fix that you may as well add make and gcc.  I would still recommend deleting Software Center as that has been dropped from 16.04 anyway.

I'm having issues trying getting conky and pcmanfm to play nicely.  The first thing I do with an OB spin is replace the ~/.config/openbox folder with my own custom version.  Have done so for many years - all my mini distros based on Debian, PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu have had this set of files.  What I had forgotten is that that masks any issues with conky and pcmanfm's role as keeper of the desktop.  Your default Openbox files use symbolic links that link back to somewhere (I have forgotten exactly where) in the system.  So by replacing those files with copies that aren't links solved the issue - conky now works.  Now for some reason I can't get the custom action in pcmanfm that uses feh to set wallpaper to work.  This is the default version of Bento in VMware.  The same version in VBox has had my standard treatment done and has no issues, as have all the installed Bento systems on our real computers.

Of course it could be just me!!  Conky is an integral part of my "desktop", and I have no requirement for a desktop manager - no icons or folders or other crud.  I actually find that Thunar is a better match because there are no desktop conflict issues that you get with pcmanfm.  But everything is always a compromise.  If you want icons you need pcmanfm.  If you want conky as well then there is conflict.  I remember this when LXDE first came out - it never really got sorted.

Anyway, as is the system works just fine.  Just me being awkward   ;D

Hi Taco,

I'll take your thoughts in consideration, but not for the software-center : it's not just been dropped, it's been replaced with a gnome software center, which is not too bad once you get used to this different presentation.

About the default files:

you get .config/openbox and also .config/pcmanfm and also .config/libfm, which is the directory of the pcmanfm library.

Ok, now this said, you can always revert as you well know... getting them back from /etc/skel.

In .config/openbox the symlinks just point to the sub-directory .config/openbox/lang which is where are the files for the openbox menus shortcuts language. You might give it a try, once the files are again there, right click on the desktop and see : it's default is English. Other options are French and German (this latter, not quite up to date, I fear).

You ALSO have *readme files* in the directory, where you have all explanations about how to set it up to your liking! And in the autostart file under .config/openbox, you have plenty comments, default in English, to help you make it as you like!

1 ) you don't need feh, hsetroot does the same job, and is default installed for it's needed by openbox to get a dark splash instead of grey.
2 ) you can use idesk - program to show icons on the desktop

how to configure it? Once idesk is started, go into it's ~/.idesk directory, look at the examples and from there add the icons you want (manually) on the desktop. This is how I had done a pclinuxos kde with xsnow running in it, back in time. :D
(still keeping a copy, as it was a unique one with a very special setup/and look and feel : http://downloads.linuxvillage.org/miscellaneous/ISOS/PCLinuxOS_En/)

(xsnow needs a root background to work… Then even now in all Bento you can have 2 different setups, just look into the default menu.xml file, you'll find some tricks there with the tags containing "xsnow", and also the related bash script to start/stop xsnow in /usr/local/bin … it just needs to install xsnow from the respos).

Hi Mélodie,

For wallpaper hsetroot doesn't do images unless they are BMP format.  Feh works fine in conjunction with both PCmanFM  and Thunar.  I remember playing with iDesk and Thunar many years ago, but I have no interest in icons - I prefer a clean desktop.  I have done a couple of versions of Bento where I have replaced PCmanFM with Thunar.  That gets rid of any desktop conflict or issues - well it works for me!  It actually takes me back to those first builds at PCLinuxOS - amongst them Blackcat, an OB astronomy spin.  That was eight or nine years ago  :o

But I digress.  One other piece of software missing from Bento is extlinux - unetbootin needs it to load an ISO onto a usb stick.

Hi Taco,

hsetroot does power the background image in Bento Sushi, it's a jpg image. Here an extract from the /etc/skel/.config/openbox/lang/autostart-en:

Citer
# root desktop, test
#hsetroot -solid '000000'
hsetroot -extend /usr/share/bento/backgrounds/wall4.jpg

it would make me happy that you would try the default configurations I put in both the full Bento and the Sushi version, and which have request loads of work to refine.  :)

Hi Mélodie,

I stand corrected - hsetroot can use other file formats.  I couldn't find that line you quoted anywhere but I did try it in my own config.  It worked but didn't play so well with my rc.xml.

Have no fear, I am working with your clean version of Bento, as well as playing with others.  I have about six different machines on VBox, and it is by messing with things that I notice discrepancies.  I noticed another small omission - brasero-cdrkit.  This allows Brasero to turn a live CD into an ISO9660 file.  I just found a couple of old CDs and converted them - one was the final Blackcat Astro and the other was good old Bonsai!  It's good to have them back in the collection.

Bento performs fine - there are no glitches with the system.  As for software inclusions - make, gcc, file-roller, extlinux and brasero-cdrkit.

Could I suggest that you delete Startup Disk Creator - pkg usb-creator-gtk.  I have found it to be unreliable and there are quite a few complaints online.  I have found that unetbootin has always done a good job, regardless of platform, and it's in the repo.

P.S - I also tried booting Bento live in French.  Looked all French to me - couldn't understand a word, so it must have worked  ;D

Hi Taco,

well, open the console, then type or copy/paste:

cd .config/openbox/lang then

mcedit autostart-en
then you can read the content of the file and search for that line.

have you read the text in the readme file in English which is located in .config/openbox ?

It's probably missing due to the rule of the "less than 700MB" which I continue to apply. Perhaps it might be best if you opened a specific thread to list applications (one per line) which you would want absolutely to see in a middle version. (Bento Maki).

The rules are roughly : final ISO less than 700MB (I use the xz compression and other things to compress max, so I can't do more on this part), easy for all users, respect the laws (some tools such as libdvdcss2 need to be installed later by the user or by the helpers of the users, just go to /usr/share/libdvdread4 and check the information there).

Good idea, we will gain space. If you open a thread related to applications to be added, I would also welcome a section of what could be removed.

Thanks for these good ideas!

not completely, the right-click menu on the desktop is in English until you switch willingly with the menu meant for, and the "Quit" displays "shutdown" instead of "éteindre". There is more French once installed, but even then the language gtk tool to remove English and install missing language packages needs to be used.

Hello,

here is the last x86_64 edition:

bento-openbox-14.04.5_3-x86_64.iso.md5sum (http://downloads.linuxvillage.org/bento-openbox-14.04.5_3-x86_64.iso.md5sum)

new added packages are:
Citer
file-roller
make
gcc
extlinux
grsync
ssh-askpass

I has also been updated, so there is a new kernel. It's size is now exactly 700MB.

It's opened for tests and comments before the i386 follows.
