Ubuntu for tablets - Full video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h384z7Ph0gU#ws)

Canonical was proud to announced earlier today, February 19, that they are planning to release a modified version of the Ubuntu operating system, for tablets.

Called “Ubuntu on tablets,” the yet to be released operating system will give users a modern and polished, yet classy tablet experience.

You can read more about Ubuntu on tablets in the official announcement (http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/tablet) or watch the video above, but in this article we’re listing the hardware requirements for this new mobile operating system powered by Ubuntu:

For entry level consumer Ubuntu tablet:

• Dual-core Cortex A15 CPU
• 2GB memory preferred
• 8GB flash storage minimum
• 7-10 inch screen size
• 4 fingers multi-touch
• Full desktop convergence is not supported

For high-end Ubuntu enterprise tablet:

• Quad-core A15 or Intel x86 CPU
• 4GB memory preferred
• 8GB flash storage minimum
• 10-12 inch screen size
• 4-10 fingers multi-touch
• Full desktop convergence is supported.

Personal note: Don't know about you, but a dual core at minimum and 2gig of RAM? That seems excessive.

I don't know about tablets, but this is what is needed in a PC to run (almost) comfortably an actual official Ubuntu with Unity. I have tried it in my laptop T60, and well, I really prefer my Openbox environment ! :D

(apart from the fact I can't get used to that kind of strange desktop).

Now, would anyone tell me what advantage does a tablet provide ? Will we one day all have : a tower, a laptop, a tablet, and a smartphone ? What is the necessity for so many sorts of device, apart from pushing the consumers to buy again and again ?  :P

Well, the extra horsepower is needed for the Unity interface. As to what advantage tablets have, I don't see one. It's a desktop computer, minus a keyboard/mouse. In discussions, others have said the tablets are "convenient" for watching movies, playing games, etc. The kind of thing you can do on a cell phone.

I recently used an iPad for the first time. I can type about 50 wpm on a keyboard. Not on an iPad. And the interface is just too cumbersome. One screen for settings, one screen for apps, etc. And only one screen at a time. I was tasked with getting someone out of Yahoo mail and into something that actually works. She could not access her contacts list in Yahoo. Set her up with Zoho mail. First thing I did was import her Yahoo contacts list. You know, the one that Yahoo couldn't read.  ::)

She also wanted her email messages coming to her iPad. So, I passed them from Zoho mail to her Apple account. (I've forgotten the email carrier name now.)
