Titre: PCLOS talking about Edu
Posté par: melodie le 17 juillet 2013 à 11:11:25
Luikki has left a comment on my blog 10 days ago and pointed to a thread at the PCLinuxOS forum, I just saw his comment (http://melodie.citrotux.org/2012/04/14/pclinuxos-education-2012-et-les-reglements-de-la-team/#comments) and answered.

I was trying to find an old 70' or 80's song which claims "bummer", but didn't find it so I changed my mind in the way.

Everybody's got to learn some time…

Beck - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LZxENkyAaY#)

Do you mean Everybody's got to learn sometime (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gaka7Mpt6Ys)?

what, disrespectful or changing the rules when it seems convenient to do so?

mimas: not really, I was looking for an sound which I remember, it has "bummer" in the song, is most probably a song of the 70's and I am unable to remember the rest. Anyhow your find for this one song is perfect!

melodie,
what's the root password for pclinuxos education?

Hi luikki,

The password is... "root" (without the quotes). As presented here:
http://meylodie.wordpress.com/2011/12/26/pclinuxos-education-en-2 (http://meylodie.wordpress.com/2011/12/26/pclinuxos-education-en-2)

thanks melodie!

but i'm unable to login as root at login screen.
selecting user "root" and password "root" gives:
"incorret username or password.letters must be typed in the correct case."

and i type in the correct case...

hi melodie!

installed pclinuxos edu to a flash drive and updated from pclinuxos new repositories
whitout breaking anything... except for pacmanfm (it isn't any longer available in the repos)
so, lost access to file manager and to desktops (water, fire, earth, air).
is there a way to correct this?

thanks

Hi,

I can see the latest pcmanfm in the PCLinuxOS repositories. ie:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates (http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates)

pcmanfm-1.1.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm (http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/pcmanfm-1.1.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm)

You need to check your sources.list (See here if needed: http://pclinuxoshelp.com/index.php/Choosing_the_Right_Repository (http://pclinuxoshelp.com/index.php/Choosing_the_Right_Repository) )

This should fix your issue. :)

hi melodie!

i've this repo enabled:
 http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/ (http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/) pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree kde games xfce4

and it gives:

pcmanfm:

Package pcmanfm has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list

so, i'm stuck... out of ignorance of what to  do...

Hi,

Try these two commands in the console as root:
rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm --rebuilddb
Once it gives the prompt back to you, in the same root console do:

apt-get update
and

apt-get install pcmanfm
Well if you are sure that the distro is fully up to date, of course. If not, after "apt-get update" you can also type "apt-get dist-upgrade" for a full update of the system.

Hopefully it should work. If not you could get the necessary packages directly from the repos, but not having the package manager working normally would be strange.

hi melodie!
after issuing all the commands i get:

"E: Package pcmanfm has no instasllation candidate

and it returns to command prompt.

i don't know how to  get the necessary packages directly from the repos... sorry...

thanks for your help

Right, something is really wrong.

Do this as root:

apt-get install spacefm spacefm-i10n
so now you have a file manager. Next go there:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010 (http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010)

download the following files with this command line:

wget -c http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/libfm-1.1.2.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/libfm-gtk-1.1.2.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/pcmanfm-1.1.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/pcmanfm-i10n-1.1.2-1pclos2013.i586.rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/pcmanfm-root-0.3-1pclos2013.i586.rpm

Then from within the root console go to the download directory ("cd /home/your_user/Downloads" whereas "your_user" is your login name), add two depends which need to be installed:
lxpolkit and libvala0 (do as root "apt-get install lxpolkit libvala0").

Once done in the directory where the packages have been downloaded, do also as root:

rpm -Uvh *.rpm
exactly as I provide it in the code tags.

This is what you should see after you type this command:
Citer
[root@localhost Downloads]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
   1:libfm                  ########################################### [ 20%]
   2:libfm-gtk              ########################################### [ 40%]
   3:pcmanfm                ########################################### [ 60%]
   4:pcmanfm-i10n           ########################################### [ 80%]
   5:pcmanfm-root           ########################################### [100%]
/var/lib/rpm/filetriggers/ldconfig.script: line 2: ldconfig: command not found
[root@localhost Downloads]#

Of course, pcmanfm is not the only way to have a background and icons on the desktop, but it is the easiest one. If you follow the above step by step, and just copy/paste the content of the command lines as you will find them in the above code tags, you should succeed.

hi melodie!
thanks for your help... and for your patience... :)
folowed your advice -. copy/past all the commands - but must have failled somewhere as there is still something wrong:
- "cd /home/your_user/Downloads" that i changed to "cd /home/school/Downloads" doesn'contain any downloads.
- anyway, "lxpolkit and libvala0" are installed (confirmed in synaptic)
- pcmanfm and root pacmanfm are now installed.

i made a screeshot of the command line and saved to "pictures" but nothing appears there :o
so here it is in text:

Citer
Password:
[root@localhost school]# cd /home/school/Downloads
[root@localhost Downloads]#  rpm -Uvh *.rpm
error: File not found by glob: *.rpm
[root@localhost Downloads]#

once again, many thanks for your help!

Hi Luikki,

If you open your file manager now and look in /home/school, do you see the rpm packages? If you do, then they are under /home/school and you could have installed them with the command line "rpm -Uvh /home/school/*.rpm" as well.

* is a joker, and is replaced by any chain of characters therefore the "rpm -Uvh ..." command line says to install all rpm archives located in the directory pointed to by the command line (and rpm will deal with whatever install order is the best).

Anyway I am happy to know that installing the two depends solved it for you. :)

humm…
Just an idea, would you like to get also this one? Kde4 Minime with Openbox : Christmas Edition 2011 (http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,100961.0.html). I still have a copy on one of my webspaces.

hi melodie!

When you open the console first thing, it opens into the /home/user, therefore I should have guessed your packages would be downloaded to /home/school and not in the Downloads sub directory.

Ok, I'll make it available tomorrow so you can tweak it to your needs (try to update, whatever seems nice for you). I can't help you with the theme thought, it's Xmas 2011 and I will not rework it.

I could try to make a similar one with Ubuntu next month or so.. Would you give an Ubuntu Openbox remix a try?

Too bad, I have found tools which are good and make it easy to create clean custom versions. Anyway you will have your KDE edu version (2011) soon.

hi again melodie!

today i instaled your pclinuxos edu, updated it (went trough the core of installing pcmanfm manually) and everything is running
just fine.  :D

(a minor problem: tried to run adlocale but it keeps complaining that the system isn't updated.. and it is... but i guess won't
bother with it. can keep it in english).

once again, thanks for your beautiful work and for your help.
je te souhaite un bon week-end.
