Titre: Ubuntu Openbox Remix RC1_2
Posté par: melodie le 21 février 2013 à 05:13:52
Hi,

Here is a new Ubuntu Openbox, this time done with Ubuntu Builder, which is a gui frontend written in... Gambas. http://code.google.com/p/ubuntu-builder (http://code.google.com/p/ubuntu-builder)

* Compared to the one before, now the Ubiquity installer has a normal background;

* The boot in live still ends on the login screen : put in "obubuntu" for username, then click in the password field, don't enter anything for a password and hit enter;

* Now the exit uses obsession from mimas;

The version is fully up to date, and a few more bloats were added, in hope some of the packages would help get it straight. And in fact some do:
*There is now a long list of languages shown at the start of the "try without installing";

* zram is started in the Live and in the post install and create one block device per processor, of 25% of the total amount RAM available in the machine. To do this, I configured some files under /usr/share/initramfs and also in /etc/initramfs, if I remember well (the files have "compcache" for a name), and I added a start command in /etc/rc.local (before the line "exit 0").(I grepped the place savagely to locate the files I was seeking for!)

So first, after boot, when you see a blue and black background with 2 little icons: press a key, anyone. Then choose your language and options if any. Then once at the login screen, well, login. Then it is possible with the Gnome language selector from the preferences menu, to switch from English to French and vice versa, just by doing a drag and drop of the sayd languages.

And for the keyboard, I added an entry to the menus with a command line which starts dpkg-reconfigure to setup the keyboard : because I had found lxkeyboard not working for me. (And I prefer something easy to use, but which works).

Here is the largest iso containing almost nothing, that has been produced since LinuxVillage started. 558M
http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC1_2.iso (http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC1_2.iso)
http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC1_2.md5sum (http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC1_2.md5sum)

There is one even larger now : RC2 567 Mo
http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC2.iso
http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC2.md5sum (http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/Ubuntu/obubuntu-12.04-i386-RC2.md5sum)

The next target will be about finding why the boot does not end on the desktop. For this, there is the /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log which can help, and perhaps comparing the scripts in /usr/share/xessions with the ones from other Ubuntu boxes. I think I will go take a look at Madbox again next.

Other Todo:
* find out how to create the "isolinux/init" file, which contains (it seems) the image for the live plymouth image;
* find out what can be safely removed without breaking anything of interest, to lower down the size;

* insert a script in the menus to start/stop zram-config at will after install time;

* work on the obubuntu slideshow, with the texts, and with the pics;

* make a few screenshots...

The actual looks a lot like the one before:
(http://meets.free.fr/debian/images/BoxBuntu.png)

Not sure I have reinstalled all the same packages, as presented here (http://linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,60.msg190.html#msg190), if not it will be done in a next version when the little issues will have found their solutions.

Downloading it now to test.

Hi,
In the meanwhile I have used the model of lightdm.conf setup from MadBox, and now the boot ends on the desktop! But I have found a new problem to use my teeth on : Synaptic does not let me display the menu to modify the sources. While testing, could you check this in the one version I uploaded ?

Thank you very much.

So far it looks kinda good, taking forever to install though. First thing I am going to do is delete Midnight Commander!!!!!!!!!!!

Then what will you use when you will need to edit files from the system as root ? I don't know a program better than mcedit (F4 in mc) for that, so easy to use and so easy to read!

And with mc you can also connect to remote machines with several protocols (fish and ftp at least).

I can use PCmanFM for root, works great.

This is taking way too long to install, it is like a net install......

What are you using for the logout manager? That is not the stock OpenBox way of logging out I don't think.....I like it.

Do you test in a real machine or in a virtual machine ? I am being testing the same version in Vbox just now and the menu "Configuration > Repositories" in Synaptic does not work, until I remove "software-properties-gtk" and it's depend. Then I get a classic presentation for it again.

What about you ?

Having problems getting it installed, killed it after a hour and not installed yet. I will try again later.

It's in a VB as I run Linux on a Mac. Yes I have a Internet hooked up.

It is as if it is trying to update and do the install at the same time, this is a bad idea. It is faster to install and then do any updates.

Every *buntu I've tried with that option seems to end badly. I do the straight install, then do updates from the installation, just as you suggested.

Synaptic does not let me display the menu to modify the sources.
I found in Debian, by trial and error, one of the software-properties packages is the one to install. Here's the description for the software-properties-gtk package:

Citer
This software provides an abstraction of the used apt repositories. It allows you to easily manage your distribution and independent software vendor software sources.
Probably similar in Ubuntu. However, I did find in Debian, after installing the correct package, I could not select the sources from the first tab unless I changed "testing" apt sources to "wheezy".

I have solved the problems, the one for the login, the one for the software-stuff-gtk too. I will test 2 new isos in vbox and send the best one if no other problem comes out from the last or the former one.

Konaexpress : recently I noticed the internet connexion said it was working but it was not, in virtualbox. finally I reverted from "bridge mode" in the vbox configuration, to "nat" then it worked correctly. A little earlier I did the install for this RC1_2 in vbox (in archlinux, on PC) and I had no problem at all, all worked well, and ended fine.

You don't need to tick "install the updates" in the installer: the isos are fully up to date.

I must not have seen that, is the update flagged by default?
Look forward to the new iso, let me know and I will download it.

Ok,

to get software-properties-gtk to not crash, this is necessary:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/software-properties/+bug/624927/comments/5

Citer
You have to recreate the file /etc/lsb-release
This file should pre-exist by default for some packages and commands.

For ubuntu precise 12.04:

gksu gedit /etc/lsb-release

and enter this text:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04 LTS"

Save and exit.

This is changed when changing the name of the distro in the Ubuntu builder setup. I'll try to digg there later, going through the casper configuration files where it is supposed to be changed.

So for now I'll follow the easy way to get it to work, even if the user name in the live will be just "ubuntu".

In order to get directly to the desktop from the "try without installing" boot option, the problem lies in the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file.

In MadBox, the file is different, and has "openbox" as "user-session", and there, the autologin works. I have followed his example.

I hope to be able to send a new one soon.

It has for name "obsession". Please have a look at the first post, now I put some blue in the text to make it come out.

We ran into this with GambOS also. Thankfully a user built a GUI app to change this on the fly so we don't have to feel with it any longer.

I see, that is cool. What is it programmed in?

It is programmed in C. See here (http://code.google.com/p/mimarchlinux/downloads/detail?name=obsession-20130101.tar.bz2&can=2&q=) ? And yes, it is a very nice program, efficient, fast, and very handy to have. No package done so far. (but fast and easy to compile). :)

I thank mimas a lot for having written it!

...and the next obubuntu is on the road (RC2 because I did from RC1 to RC1_6 and even one more after...).

Here is how it goes on in the install:
(http://meets.free.fr/debian/images/obubuntu-direct-install.png)

I have ticked the option to install packages, and although it was up to date it has installed about 60 packages it seems (language packs perhaps ? not sure, it's a bit small for my sight in the vbox machine).

So all works well, at least here?

One of the things to add to the todo, is to modify a slideshow to adapt it to the Openbox version. One more will be to report a bug, but I am not sure yet how to present it.

In the live, there was an error message at the start of the desktop, related to the software-properties-gtk. It appears that the only file in /etc/xdg/autostart which could be related was the update-notifier.desktop file. If I started the update-manager from the menus then in it's window hit the button advanced, it was starting the software-properties-gtk window. So as a test I move the update-notifier.desktop to itself as update-notifier.desktop-backup and restarted the session : no more message. We will see if that is also true with the coming RC2 because I have renamed it there too. If the error does not appear either in that one version I will be good to go report this in bugzilla.

I looked at the site for Obsession, it looks real nice! This is what Open Box has needed for a while. I made my logout manager in Gambas an it runs well to, I made it so I could add a graphic image to it like the LXDE one.

The obsession package as you saw provide three different components. And if you download the source you will also get images for the graphical logout. Mine use only the icons from the icon theme installed.

RC2 is out ! Same adress as in the first post, just hit RC2 ! the former bugs are solved, now I need the people to find the bugs I didn't meet with yet!

(not much time this morning to say more... )

Nope. I have done RC1_3 to RC1_6 at home, plus an additional one, and I ended getting rid of the 3 annoying bugs so I gave it RC2 for a name.

Ok, first post modified in a visible way.

Kona, the installer is Ubiquity, and the ads for the distro is contained in slide shows. ubuntu-slideshow, lubuntu-slideshow... I got permission from Julien Lavergne to use it for the purpose of this project. To modify it, it will be necessary to redo the slides (they are small images) and edit xml files (it is very close to html, but with a different doctype).

It is possible to study the sources of the package, which are common to the slideshows of all the Ubuntu official versions. I am not sure this is quite necessary to make the Ubiquity program run, but I think it looks good!

Not sure I follow but if I could get my hands on the graphics then maybe we could just swap them out with your/our graphics and use the same file names so there is little to re-code. I would think that replacing the text would be really easy.

This would make the distro look sharp!

It is a long work to do, because for 1 all the images must be replaced with relevant screen-shots, and for 2 there are 13 xml files (13 languages), if I remember well. So this is not in a hurry, because it is also conditioned partly by the future final choice of applications, which is not yet fully defined, unless we just mention the actual ones ? Not sure.

I might want gxine as a video reader : it seems to avoid lots of bloat, but I didn't test it to read videos yet so...

The first need is testing in as many machines as possible, to check for hardware related bugs. BTW, in Virtualbox, a tip : lately I noticed I could not get the network working, if I configured Vbox to use bridge mode instead of NAT, in the network configuration section of the virtualbox setup.

Titre: Re : Ubuntu Openbox Remix RC1_2

I don't configure VBox too much, just try and use the default settings if you can and avoid this problem.
Titre: Re : Ubuntu Openbox Remix RC1_2

It is really easy. Select the distro you want to boot from, then hit the "Configuration" button which is under the menus of the Virtualbox main window, and once there go to the network tab which is in the left sidebar. Once there you can select "bridge", which will allow having in the guest machine an ip on the same family of ip's than the one of your host machine, else, if you select NAT the guest machine will have an ip looking like "10.0.1.15" or such.

Actually I can't get the network anymore  in the live if I don't position it on NAT.

About setting up a bootable USB I have one solution to do it manually. About setting up a bootable USB with persistence, I am being testing a method which will use the first USB key already manually setup. I'll be back when I can say if I get a good result with this one too.
