RC1 has been replaced by RC2. Links have been updated.

RC2 Notes:
1. Removed SpaceFM and installed QtFM as file manager.
2. Installed wbar for quick program launcher.
3. Fixed the transparency issues in conky. Not entirely happy with the colors, as brown looks like pink, due to the full transparency.
4. Removed all LXDE-type utilities.
5. Set xcompmgr to more "agressive" settings. Transparency, shadows and fading are all on by default.
6. Removed QtWeb and installed QupZilla as web browser. QtWeb was hanging on too many sites if any of the available options were enabled.

RC1 Notes:
Changed themes.
Removed LXpanel.
Removed PCManFM and installed SpaceFM as file manager.
Removed LXMusic and installed VLC as media player.
Added flashplayer plugin for web browser.
Added gigolo for mounting network shares.
Added volumeicon/alsamixergui.
Added conky display.
Fixed gaps in menus.

Based on: Debian wheezy netinstall - repositories changed to testing
Window manager: Openbox
Desktop environment: RazorQt
File manager: QtFM
Minimum RAM: 256MB (The Live to RAM option has been tested with 256MB of RAM.)
Kernel: Debian 3.2.0-4-686-pae

Instructions for setting your weather region are in the $HOME/Documents directory. The installed web browser is Qupzilla. It is a newly developed application with not many bells and whistles. Still, it works well, is fast and has low RAM requirements. You can download the iso and md5sum from the links below. Iso size is 638MB.

Hi,

* About icons, the one I found being the largest cover is Faenza, and I add Faenza Cupertino to have it blue. This is an option of course.

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza?content=128143 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza?content=128143)

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza-Cupertino?content=129008 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza-Cupertino?content=129008)

I don't know if it is available directly in the Debian repos... it seems not.

* For Grub 2 you can try grub-customize:
https://launchpad.net/grub-customizer (https://launchpad.net/grub-customizer)

* you can try the Archlinux ways to get better fonts for the whole system:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration)

of course you may have to adapt some parts, perhaps the configuration files are not the same at Debian, some packages may have different names... well you know, this is the idea.

/Edit : about ppa, you can't use it directly but you can try getting the deb file and install it with "dpkg -i <package_name.deb>
start from here: https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3 (https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3)

click to View package details (https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3/+packages)

https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3/+packages (https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3/+packages)

once there:

ie : i386
https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3/+build/4322494 (https://launchpad.net/~nemh/+archive/gambas3/+build/4322494)

there you have the list and all the files built.

Tea looks like a cool little text editor, it is programmed in QT.

Also, are you going with Razor Cutie as a name instead of Katana? It's cool if you do, I will try and think of some new artwork then.

I had thought about doing it in Python but if iit has Gambas loaded in it then I will look at doing a QT version of my Conky manager for it.

@mel,

Thanks. I found grub-customize (too late) in an antiX repo. I'll try that. I'll look for Faenza icons, too. I think Debian has them.

@kona,

I forgot to add I deleted the menu button in the qtpanel. It was redundant. You can always put it back if you want it. The right-click Openbox menu has more entries than the Qt one.

Well, I have transparency working now, using xcompmgr.sh.

(http://s19.postimage.org/mwlzoawtb/katana04.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/mwlzoawtb/)

I spent some time looking for a simple application launcher. The qtpanel has an applet for it, but I guess it only works with Kwin. After looking at stuff like cairo-launcher, which pulls in a ton of dependencies, including mono, I decided to use the lxpanel already installed. However, if I try to use the transparency setting with lxpanel that works beautifully with LXDE, I get this:

(http://s19.postimage.org/qhhv7j1cv/katana05.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/qhhv7j1cv/)

Not very attractive. I made a white background image to use with lxpanel, instead. I think I have the screen blank fixed by creating a desktop file that uses xset to turn off the blanking.

You see, there is no wheezy section in launchpad. So the update fails. And I end up doing add-apt-repository --remove ppa:nemh/gambas3. As far as getting a .deb file for Gambas, it was installed from a Debian repo. The installed packages are .debs, so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

I fear you don't understand what I was saying : don't use the repos, use the deb package generated by the launchpad server! (read my demonstration until the end).

Debian    Debian packages for Sarge/Sid are made by José L. Redrejo.

Last version of Gambas packages for Debian sid are always available at the official Debian repositories.

Last version of gambas packages for Debian stable (or etch) are always available using apt-get, adding this line to the /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://apt.linex.org/linex/gambas/stable/ (http://apt.linex.org/linex/gambas/stable/) ./

Important note: Etch users can not use gambas2-gb-gtk, gambas2 & gambas2-gb-gtk-svg packages due to the gtk version (2.8) available in Debian etch. If they want to use these packages there is a gtk-2.10 etch backport for available via apt-get using

deb http://apt.linex.org/linex/gtk-2.10/ (http://apt.linex.org/linex/gtk-2.10/) ./

Hi,

So the info with the parked domain is outdated... anyhow that was for a stable release, and I believe you work with testing...

I will look forward to read about the Ubuntu packages, to know if they work in Debian testing.

and it might still be possible to mail José L. Redrejo <jredrejo AT edu DOT juntaextremadura DOT net> (saw his address at http://gambasdoc.org/help/doc/package?view (http://gambasdoc.org/help/doc/package?view) in the Debian §)

gnome-brave brings in 16 MB, but gnome-colors pulls it in as well as 6 other packages, which makes 8!

All them bring in 31.8 MB.

It's probably not more than Faenza + Faenza Cuppertino though, and it might be an idea to give it a try.

The arrows are a medium blue color rather than white and
pointy as in the regular gnome.

Patrick and Melodie,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm still working on the icon thing, although Oxygen still fits the bill the best, so far. It comes down to one damn icon that is a removable media daemon and shows in the qtpanel. So far, only the Oxygen set will show it. With all other icon sets, it comes up invisible.

I've made no progress with the GRUB menu editing, so far. grub-customize only affects the GRUB menu shown when there is no graphic screen displayed in the GRUB menu. I think I can live with the way it is by rearranging the Katana sword position in the graphic. I haven't looked at BURG yet, and don't know if it allows editing the graphic mode GRUB display or not.

Can you isolate which icon that is   ?     Put it in a better overall theme.

More or less make it permanent in /usr/share/icons somehow ?

I've changed icons occasionally  when I wanted a certain icon.
But the rest of the icon theme was OK.

Sometimes an icon is provided as a svg file and is not seen, then you can open it with inkscape and export it to png to solve the problem.

No, not yet. I've been trying to. The applet's displayed name doesn't match anything in /usr/share/applications/.

Sometimes an icon is provided as a svg file and is not seen, then you can open it with inkscape and export it to png to solve the problem.

It's not an svg image. After doing "cleanup" of what I thought were extra, unnecessary icon sets, another one disappeared from the qtpanel's system tray. Turns out it was from the Tango set. The one I already mentioned is from the Oxygen set. That leaves just one more showing in the system tray that is probably from Gnome's regular icon set. It's ClipIt, the clipboard manager. The icon shows up just fine in the system tray. It has a menu entry in Accessories that DID NOT show. I got around that by copying the desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications/ and editing the Icon= line.

Hello,

Before removing a file from the system, the command "dpkg -S /path/to/file" should tell you if a file belongs to a package and if so (it should!) it will let you know which one.

Then if you remove a full package, there should be no leftovers, but if there are some, they are shown in Synaptic, in the "Residual configs" category where you can find them and remove easily.

So removing icons from a set accidentally should not happen to you anymore. (where you formerly used to remove a lot manually? :)  )

Well, that's true. I knew most of that already. But, it presupposes that I already know which icons belong to an icon group. In this case, I didn't know ahead of time. Removing an icon set showed the obvious relationship.

About grub gfx and isolinux gfx, I have some information, but I am still looking for more knowledge. isolinux will need to be able to use source files from gfxboot-theme package (source package, plus gfxboot installed, and a related devel package). I don't know yet how to change the files in the source package, I hope to find someone who will teach that to me, because I didn't find any documentation.

Here is the Debian package for that:
http://packages.debian.org/en/source/wheezy/gfxboot-themes (http://packages.debian.org/en/source/wheezy/gfxboot-themes)

Grub does not need anything else than a tool to help customize the files : I gave you the name, I think if you first grab the deb file for ubuntu and install it to Debian it has chances to work, then you will just have to copy the grub files of you box to your build directory if you use a chroot method, or leave it as is if you use remastersys.

Else than that, there are docs out there, and I think there is even a chan for grub2.
perhaps the tutorial here could be interesting: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html (http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html)

IRC might be #grub on Freenode. I found the info on the web and didn't check.

Which one or the two gfxboot do you want to try first ?

BTW there are many packages related to Gambas and I have no idea which ones you need:

Well, that didn't work out too well. The first package in the series to build is gambas_runtime. It wouldn't build because libc6 is too old. I changed to the sid (unstable) repo and reloaded the package database. Still the same version of libc6.

In order to get the latest Gambase versions, I decided to do this (http://linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,197.msg1262.html#msg1262) instead.

The blade in the login window is the first thing I've ever done with GIMP. Just cropped and resized the original pic and set the background to transparent. Please let me know if you find any problems. I had forgotten to add flashplayer in the first respin.

Hello,

About flashplugin, does the version you installed read videos on machines having a cpu with no sse2 instruction ? (See my post about last OBUbuntu, I explained about the issue).

It's Adobe's version 11.2, supposedly the last version Linux will ever get from Adobe. I knew Adobe would no longer be supporting Linux, at all, but I did not know they had dropped support for the SSE2 instruction set early in the 11.x series.

I wish flash video would just die, already. It's way too CPU intensive for what it delivers. MP4 is so much better.

I was viewing some videos on youtube the other day, when I realized I could see them with Firefox and not with Midori. What is that ? Did I wonder. Well, lol, I had not flash installed, I was seeing videos in HTML5. :D

humm... just found this, will give it a try: https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/youtube-html5-switch/

PS: that works ! I removed flashplugin-installer, and although at first glance a plugin is required, the second after the video plays ! :D

That will work with Firefox. But, what about alternate browsers, such as QtWeb and Qupzilla? I don't think they accept Firefox plugins. I'll have to look. If I remember right, YouTube is now converting all flash content to HTML5. But, not all sites do.

There is another website with lots of videos I was told, each time I go there and try to watch one, there is a black rectangle, often with lots of little white dots, as an ancient TV after the last programs had finished, and sometimes just a strange little drawing in the black rectangle, looks like Mont Saint Michel : and I never have a chance to see anything.

I'm able to play videos from that site. Appears they're all flash.

at youtube there are a bunch of webm/html5 videos, and I have a machine I setup for someone, which has a amd GPU : athlon 2800+ and no sse2 instruction. Now, with the latests Firefox, or the latest Chromium, or even the latest Google Chrome (there is a deb file at their site) there is no one which can use Flashplayer, for Flashplayer (packaged) was compiled for processors with the sse2 instruction, and if I get the libflashpepper-stuff.so from the google chrome deb package, now Firefox crashes at start.

For this machine the only videos available will be the ones provided as HTML5. (and the plugin I discovered for changing flash to html5 does not work there either).

Hey, my first customer! Can I interest you in a filesystem defragger? It's just €39.99 because it only works with the FAT32 filesystem. Or, how about a virus checker? It doesn't really do anything because it's unnecessary on a Linux system, but the interface is very pretty and it's only €19.99. And I'll throw in a telnet terminal for free!

Just kidding.  :D  To add a keyboard shortcut, open the RazorQt Configuration Center by left clicking its icon just to the right of desktop4 button in the left side of the lower desktop panel. Left click the Razor Shortcut Configuration icon.

(http://s19.postimg.org/lhox87867/razor_shortcut01.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/lhox87867/)

If you want to create a group description, double click the field with "New Group" in it.

(http://s19.postimg.org/d1zcqp5b3/razor_shortcut02.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/d1zcqp5b3/)

I inserted the name "Terminal".

The next two steps can be done in any order. First, I double clicked the Command field and inserted "sakura". But you could insert "x-terminal-emulator" or the name of any other terminal executable.

(http://s19.postimg.org/dq879n40v/razor_shortcut03.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/dq879n40v/)

Next, I double-clicked the Shortcut field, which leaves it looking kind of blurry, but says "None".

(http://s19.postimg.org/xne4ilmvz/razor_shortcut04.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/xne4ilmvz/)

Last, but not least, press the key combination you want. In your case, it will be Super+t. I pressed Ctrl+t.

(http://s19.postimg.org/o4912vorj/razor_shortcut05.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/o4912vorj/)

You're finished. It's pretty simple to assign a keyboard shortcut this way.

You can't do it the same way?

I have a copy of RC2, but not RC1. From the menu, when you click About Razor, what version does it show? Is it 0.5.2? You can try, from a terminal, entering: /usr/bin/razor-config-globalkeyshortcuts.

You haven't responded, so I assume you haven't found a solution. Can you verify if version 0.5.2.1 Razorqt is installed? Can you check to see if package razorqt-globalkeyshortcuts is installed? If you did a full install from the CD, you can update any of the packages.
