wrong keyboard layout

hi!
i've installed village openbox to a usb flas drive and i blieve i've made the right choice when selecting the
keyboard (a micro$oft wireless 2000) layout (portuguese_pt).
all went well except for the keyboard layout. i had to discover which keys were the right ones in order to login
(for instance if i type an "o" it gives a "c", a "d" gives an "a", an "u" gives a "l" and so on)
i've tried to reset the correct layout in "applications, preferences, internationalization & localization" but what
ever i choose, after a reboot the keyboard layout is wrong...
how can i get it right?

i had to choose "portuguese" (eliminate dead keys)".
