"France runs a vast electronic surveillance operation, intercepting and stocking data from citizens' phone and internet activity, using similar methods to the US National Security Agency's Prism programme exposed by Edward Snowden, Le Monde has reported.

An investigation by the French daily found that the DGSE, France's external intelligence agency, had spied on the French public's phone calls, emails and internet activity. The agency intercepted signals from computers and phones in France as well as between France and other countries, looking not so much at content but to create a map of "who is talking to whom", the paper said"

Unless we can control our data paths from one end to the other, we are all subject to having our transmissions intercepted somewhere along the way. Encryption may hinder the decyphering, but may also make the user a target simply for using encryption.

Another no-win situation.

Another no-win situation.

Does one know about any no-no-win possible situation?

PS: one more for your evening reading, This document describes the DPI-SSL feature available in SonicOS 5.6.

DPI-SSL Overview
Deep Packet Inspection of Secure Socket Layer (DPI-SSL) extends SonicWALL’s Deep Packet Inspection technology to allow for the inspection of encrypted HTTPS traffic and other SSL-based traffic. The SSL traffic is decrypted transparently, scanned for threats and then re-encrypted and sent along to its destination if no threats or vulnerabilities are found. DPI-SSL provides additional security, application control, and data leakage prevention for analyzing encrypted HTTPS and other SSL-based traffic. The following security services and features are capable of utilizing DPI-SSL:
•Gateway Anti-Virus
•Gateway Anti-Spyware
•Intrusion Prevention
•Content Filtering
•Application Firewall
•Packet Capture
•Packet Mirror

DPI-SSL has two main deployment scenarios:
•Client DPI-SSL: Used to inspect HTTPS traffic when clients on the SonicWALL security appliance’s LAN access content located on the WAN.
•Server DPI-SSL: Used to inspect HTTPS traffic when remote clients connect over the WAN to access content located on the SonicWALL security appliance’s LAN. (...)

Sometime back I had seen an article about if you send an encrypted message to your accountant, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can and will demand that you un-encrypt the message.

Are there laws which can force anyone to accept?

French governent has initiated a vast campaign against P2P and Direct Download which forced people to look toward crypted networks, VPN and other kind of fancy stuff to hide their communications. Compagnies now run their business with the « nobody will spy on you » thing, and advanced users are aware of such tools. The privacy thing is not true as the traffic can use US network and can be intercepted by US agencies when not in the crypted tunnel, though it's another story. The french agency now hardly figures how to pin point the bad guys and the interesting communications to decipher in order to get the intelligence they need. So they go old school again.

It's funny to see how the french government made such a mess and to hear DGSE say in a more polite way : « stop your shitty laws against piracy, we are loosing all the easy ways to intercept internet communications ».

But we have private companies that are good at listening to people... in other countries, for example : https://duckduckgo.com/?q=amesys+eagle

When buying a cell phone or a prepaid card for it, you need to give your ID.
When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.

The IRS can demand all they want of me. I will assert my Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights. I've done it before.

Old news before the PRISM case, a french company named Thalès was in charged of building a communications interception system (SMS, mails, phone, etc...). It's also one of the big companies in charged of one of the two french national clouds. "To escape the evil eyes of US agencies" some sarcastic guys say.

The other french cloud is built by SFR and Bull (which owned Amesys company and sold surveillance systems to Ghadafi and other dictators).

Their article contains a link to another of their articles, stating Thalès could also be likely to be listened:
Thales, l'écouteur écouté?

It is fun you bring the link to Thalès now. I have read some time ago about the one who listens who will be listened…

Le groupe de défense et d'électronique, qui va centraliser toutes les interceptions téléphoniques et Internet, est lui-même susceptible d'être mis sur écoutes.

The electronic and defense group, who will centralize all telephonic and Internet interceptions, is himself likely to be wiretapped. (…)

> Thalès could also be likely to be listened

China and U.S.A probably do it for a long time as Thalès is in aerospace and defence industry.
